STEM PROGRAM
SMMS has long been the pioneer for innovation and change in the DeKalb County School System (view a sample below). From its inception as a pilot school for the middle school concept for the district, SMMS prides itself in being a leader for educational opportunities for students within the Stone Mountain, Georgia area.
The SMMS STEM program, conceived in 2013, was created with a mission to prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program emphasizes project-based learning that leads to real-world solutions.
The SMMS STEM program, operates with several goals listed below:

§ Promote connections among STEM disciplines through authentic project-based
lessons
§ Facilitate students’ use of the engineering design process in order to solve real-
world problems
§ Stimulate students’ interest in careers emphasizing science, technology,
engineering and mathematics.
§ Develop students’ creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking
and comprehension
§ Cultivate community, business and parent partnerships that support
students’ participation in the STEM program and pursuit of STEM careers.
